Moss of Utopia Tarot Decks

Deluded Pleiades, vessels of mysteries

"Moss of utopia" is a metaphor used by Odysseus Elytis in the section of his epic work The Axion Esti (What Is Worthy, 1959) dedicated to young women, whom he goes on to describe as "the deluded Pleiades" and "the Vessels of Mysteries, full to the brim yet bottomless".

Moss of Utopia & Moss of Utopia Midnight Edition Tarot decks (October-November 2015) pay tribute to the Greek Nobel laureate poet and visual artist, also known for his surrealist photo collages that illustrated a few of his books, as well as to his beautifully allegorical contemplations of femininity.

The traditional Major Arcana figures are reinvented in a modern, often subversive manner, their symbolisms re(en)coded and expanded into a philosophical, sometimes humorous, macabre or even deliberately grotesque view of the standard Tarot emblems and connotations.

Moss of Utopia's all girl trump suit asserts, avenges, dissects and makes good natured (but merciless) fun of itself against the cultural and social preconceptions surrounding the female gender, in a world still plagued by stereotypes and superstitions which should have stayed buried in a very distant past. Those little symbols below each card's name were a bit of a challenge to coordinate in a meaningful, although not too conventional or predictable way.
