Project System 12: Digital Wonderland 10

Heaven, Hell and the universe

Last in the series, the tenth Digital Wonderland album constitutes the epilogue to the fantasy saga of the same title. Powerful compositions of a cosmic magnificence are interspersed with dark, ominous ones or lighter and more playful, all characterised by enticing melodiousness and great beauty of form.

The music creates an atmosphere that somehow brings to mind the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, but it could also be the soundtrack of a film with a mediaeval/surreal theme (of the Peter Greenaway kind). As in most albums of the series, the titles are telling a story that starts to form surreptitiously in the listener's mind as each track follows the other. Pleasantness is combined with a trace of sadness, magnificence with everyday life elements and a humorous note added here and there; spiriting-up ambitiousness blends with comforting sweetness, creating ample dreamscapes for the imagination to roam.

I don't know if we can actually speak of a symphonic or orchestral work, given the use of exclusively virtual instruments, but the title is undeniably deserved.

A brilliant conclusion to a fascinating musical tale.

NOTE: This album is no longer available on Jamendo, but may still be freely downloadable from The Jamendo Albums Collection @ Archive.org.
