The Gay Romeos: Debutunten

Provocative satire

I laughed to tears reading the short chronicle of this collaboration, and the cover already gave me the impression of a humorous album, created by the combined forces of Arne Pahlke and Kangaroo MusiQue.

I was familiar with the power of Arne Pahlke's humor and social satire, and this new work was no disappointment. The (self) sarcasm is devastating, with the inevitable, latent elements of tragic irony - any extreme ends up coinciding with its diametrical opposite: there can be ugliness in excessive beauty, a flatline at the edge of passion, and the inverse.

The artifice of dialogues over the telephone or internet chat is superb, looking like an oblique, although probably not intended reference to The Human Voice by Jean Cocteau.

Four sketches of toxic, provocative parody, not for everyone and definitely not for the prejudiced and short-sighted.

NOTE: The Debutunten EP is no longer available on Jamendo. The four songs of the original release have been included in the Treibgut... zu anderen Ufern album by Kangaroo MusiQue.
