Arne Pahlke: Abgrundtiefen

Powerful mix of sarcasm and despair

An extremely interesting album from an artist who knows well how to make contradictions co-exist in a far from harmonious, but deeply thought-provoking way. The poetry of the lyrics is cruel but intriguing, while the theatrical singing style reminds me a little of Udo Kier.

Sarcasm, despair, social criticism, controversial humor, wild imagination and melodious sadness blend in random analogy, accompanied by distorted mechanical sounds or the staccato rhythm of cabaret tunes.

Nietzsche wrote that when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back into you. Art is most of the times a way of "exorcising" what is eating our soul.

This is not music that brings peace of mind - it is music that wakes us up and forces us to look, really look at the inhuman and fascinating world around us.

NOTE: This album is no longer available on Jamendo, but may still be freely downloadable from The Jamendo Albums Collection @ Archive.org.
